Nearly 230 Republican members of Congress in a brief filed on Thursday urged the Supreme Court to overturn the landmark abortion case Roe v. Wade, CNN reported.

Lawyers representing the 44 senators and 184 House members argued that the court should use an upcoming Mississippi case to "release its vise grip on abortion politics" and leave abortion-related legislation up to states to decide.

"Congress and the States have shown that they are ready and able to address the issue in ways that reflect Americans' varying viewpoints and are grounded in the science of fetal development and maternal health," the brief said.

Some of the prominent Republicans that signed on to the brief include Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy.

The brief comes ahead of the Supreme Court's major abortion case to be reviewed next term, when the justices will consider whether a Mississippi law that bans abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy is unconstitutional.

The filing also comes a week after Mississippi's attorney general called on the Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade, so that the state may uphold its restrictions to abortion access. Lawyers for the state argued in a brief that Roe is "egregiously wrong" and outdated.
